Gone South: Why is that Retirees Are Buying Real Estate in Costa Rica?

“You don’t even have to confine your search within the country’s 50 states. About 50,000 retired Americans have crossed the southern border to buy real estate in Costa Rica to spend their golden years there. Expats can obtain residency status by proving that they receive at least $1000 in pension, Social Security, or retirement funds. Once they do, they can then enroll in the country’s top-notch public health-care system for a small monthly stipend. International Living Magazine says that health-care costs in Costa Rica is only about a third to a fifth of what it would cost stateside, and even private health insurance is markedly cheaper.

Many retirees live comfortably there on just $1000-$2000 a month, nearly impossible in the States. On that monthly budget, a retiree need not sacrifice some luxuries like cable TV, internet, cell phones, and the occasional dinner out to enjoy his life in the new country.”

Costa Rica’s Southern Zone: An Expat Haven

Tags

, ,

Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast—more popularly known as the Southern Zone—is what most people envision the country to be: Lush rain forests on top of mountains that drop dramatically to the shores of a blue water beach. You’ll see no sophisticated structures, no highrises blocking the ocean view. Here, nature and the outdoors is your museum.

The best part about the Southern Zone is that it’s likely to stay this way forever; the area gets fewer visitors than other regions in the country and any development doesn’t pose much of an impact on the government. Hit the beach and you’ll likely have the whole place to yourself.

Dominical, an idyllic beach town and a surfer’s paradise located at the north end of the Zone, has remained relatively unchanged in the past few decades. Most homes in the area are built to catch cool sea breezes. A few bars and restaurants line the beach road. If you can imagine yourself spending the rest of your days relaxing with a bowl of ceviche (a seafood dish marinated in citrus juices and spiced with chili peppers) on one hand, and a michelada (beer mixed with lime juice on ice, with salt sprinkled on the edge of the glass) on the other, then Dominical is definitely the place to be.

“A lot can be done with these survey results, although it’s not a stretch to say that they proved just how lucrative investing in real estate in Costa Rica can be. Firms like Dominical Real Estate even specialize in specific provinces simply because tourists and investors alike have their hands full finding the “best place to stay” in the country. The province of Dominical, for instance, is a well-known haven for surfers, jet skiers, and others who’re interested in water sports.

Of course, people should still be careful even when visiting one of the happiest places on Earth today. The US government recommends caution when swimming in the country’s beaches since the currents can change dramatically in an instant. Even buying real estate in Costa Rica may warrant the help of a lawyer, especially if the buyers aren’t familiar with the country’s property laws.”

“Pura Vida”: Life is Good in Costa Rica

Retiring from work can be an emotional experience. It can be disorienting and saddening because there will be no day-to-day pattern to follow anymore. However, it can also be liberating. You may go on a dream trip, participate in extreme sports, or catch up on your bucket list. You may even decide to move somewhere new and exotic, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Costa Rica, a small, Spanish-speaking country in Central America, would be an ideal place to settle after retirement.

Costa Rica boasts of a total estimated population of 4.7 million, with 50,000 residents being Americans, most of them retirees. Costa Rica is a popular retirement spot for a number of reasons. For one thing, it has no shortage of beautiful scenery, amazing beaches, and biologically diverse wildlife. The natives, called Ticos, are a friendly bunch who make expats in their country feel welcome and at home. The local government is a stable democracy and offers a great public health care system. Real estate is also quite affordable, particularly in the quiet towns of Atenas, Nosara, and San Ramon. The cost of living in the area is relatively low. You can opt to live downtown or by the ocean for a more relaxing ambiance.

Usually topping lists of the happiest countries in the world, Costa Rica is a country where people like to say, “pura vida,” meaning life is good. In Costa Rica, one can say that yes, it definitely is.

An Unarmed Democracy with a Rich History

Costa Rica is a unique place to live in because, compared to other nations, it has an unarmed political democracy and is home to a green economic revolution. It also boasts of a rich history. In 1502, Christopher Columbus landed on its shores and was so impressed with the place that he requested to be its governor. However, the post was given to his rival.

After Columbus, different explorers also landed in Costa Rica. The Spaniards established a colony in 1563 that was called Cartago and became the country’s first capital. Costa Rica gained its independence from Spain in 1821.

Costa Rica then became a province of Central America, but withdrew in 1838 and became a sovereign country. In 1948, it underwent a two-month-long civil war. Then, in 1949, the country formed a new constitution that dissolved its Armed Forces in order to prevent civil war from happening again.

Now, Costa Rica is called the “Switzerland of Central America” because of its natural beauty, peaceful democracy, and comfortable lifestyle. Costa Ricans are particularly proud of their unarmed democracy. As President Oscar Arias said upon accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, “We seek peace and democracy together, indivisible, an end to the shedding of human blood, which is inseparable from an end to the suppression of human rights.”

Purchasing property in Costa Rica is a smart decision if you want to live the rest of your life in a paradise-like environment. This small country has some of the most stunningly pristine beaches in the world. If you’ve been touring around the globe for quite a while, you will know Costa Rica is special. Here are some simple tips on looking for property in any of the country’s lush communities.

Before getting your map, think of how you want to live most of your life in your next home. Is it the beach you want to see when you wake up or the mountains? Costa Rica is rich with both so you won’t have any problems finding and visiting either as often as you want. However, choose the one that makes you feel relaxed and satisfied better.

Visit the official website of Costa Rica. For sure, you’ll find vital information that can help you make the right decision. Reliable magazines and books may also provide you with information specific to a certain locality. Look for pictures of cities and towns to know what fits the lifestyle you want as soon as you move.

If you’re not good at choosing, most likely because you are a stranger to the country, hire a reliable real estate agent. An agent can find a good match for your preference and deal with the legal aspect of the purchase. He can help you get the property you want at a competitive price.

Costa Rica, Costa Retire: Retiring in Costa Rica

American pensioners have it rough; sure, they can live on their pension alone, but the increasingly higher costs of living in the U.S. can leave little cash left for saving. Such dire conditions make retiring overseas a much more appealing option for some seniors. The key to retiring overseas is to find a country that boasts lower costs so that the elderly can maximize their pension.

Of course, it would help if pensioners chose a location they’ll genuinely enjoy, not just because it’s cheap. Mild climates, picturesque landscapes, pleasant people, and unique cultural aspects can all enhance a retiree’s overseas life. A good example of a place that combines the best of all these without being being too expensive is Costa Rica.

Costa Rica’s proximity to the United States makes it so appealing as a vacation retreat, but even more so as a retirement destination. It’s possessed of warm weather, rich flora and fauna, wonderful beaches, and what’s perhaps the world’s greenest economy. Additionally, prices in Costa Rica are very low by American standards, and its easy to have dollars changed into the local colon. Everything a pensioner could want, including lower prices, can all be found in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is known for its gorgeous attractions. But aside from that, the country is now emerging in the real estate industry as well. Expect to have a lot of real estate units to be sold in the market in the coming days and months. This is after The Banco Nacional Costa Rica’s declaration that they will be selling off properties it has repossessed in the past. These assets are said to be reclaimed due to overdue payments.

The season is on for prospective buyers to check out those assets for grabs. These mainly include houses and lots. The said situation is an advantage to the growing tourism industry in the country, as these properties can be used to put up more beach front resorts and even residential units.

With the attractive scenery and the number of available real estate in Costa Rica, you wouldn’t be surprised if people will not just visit the country to travel and explore, but will also start living and have a new life there.
